Nine Wisconsin companies made the Fortune 500 list this year, with WEC Energy Group Inc. making a large jump, moving up 69 spots.

The utility company is based in Milwaukee and had $7.47 billion in revenue, with a 26.1 percent revenue change, coming in at No. 368 on the Fortune 500. The highest ranked in the state was the Milwaukee-based life insurer, Northwestern Mutual at No. 97, up three places from last year.

Northwestern Mutual’s total risk premium sales topped $1 billion in 2016. The company managed total premium revenue of $17.9 billion for its insurance and annuity products, a record.

Last year's top Milwaukee-area company — Johnson Controls Inc. — still has an operational base in Glendale, but has officially moved its headquarters to Cork, Ireland, so it is not included in Fortune's calculations.
