Amazon.com Inc. has started hiring and plans to eventually fill 1,000 full-time jobs for a four-story fulfillment center that will open later this year in Oak Creek.
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) has worked with Oak Creek officials this summer to gain permits to stock products in the 2.6-million-square-foot center near Ryan Road and Interstate 94. The Oak Creek facility will have products on three upper levels that automated equipment can pick out for shipping.
It is the largest new addition to Amazon’s regional network. The online retailer also is setting up numerous smaller operations in the area to load products onto vans for delivery to homes.
Kirsten Wenker, Amazon spokeswoman, on Thursday confirmed hiring has begun for management positions in Oak Creek, and will soon start for other associates and specialist jobs.
The company in late July posted online notices for area manager, operations manager and other positions in Oak Creek.
Oak Creek officials are reviewing an application to hang a 23-foot-wide by 10-foot-tall hiring sign facing Ryan Road on the exterior of the Amazon building. That banner, reading, “Want to work here?” would direct applicants to text Amazon for jobs posting updates. Those updates will also be available on the company’s website.
If approved, that banner could be hung as early as Aug. 26 and remain up until the end of December, according to a city hearing notice.
Amazon is significantly expanding its Milwaukee-area distribution network, and is creating a large number of warehousing and driving jobs in the process. In recent months, it has sought local approvals for new operations in Yorkville, Sturtevant, Wauwatosa and Kenosha. The company also is hiring for jobs at a new center built in Beloit.
